Just as the lawn care season is beginning, a major riding lawn mower manufacturer issued a recall of nearly 4,000 lawn mowers. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (Recall Number 13-147), the Toro Company is recalling nearly 4,000 Toro Z Master Commercial 2000 Series riding lawn mowers with serial numbers74141, 74134, and 74145. These lawn mowers were manufactured in the U.S.

The concern is that the idler pulley can rub against the fuel tank, posing a fire hazard. Toro received 6 reports of incidents, but no reports of injuries. These lawn mowers were sold at Toro dealers across the United States and Canada from January 2012 through April 2013 for roughly $8,000 to $9,000. Anyone in possession of one of these lawn mowers should contact Toro for a free repair.

In November 2012, over 2,500 of the same model riding lawn mowers were recalled due to a separate fire safety concern. The issue in that recall involved a potential for the traction belt to wear through the mower’s fuel tank, which posed a fire hazard. These lawn mowers were sold from January 2012 through August 2012.

Defective products injury cases involving recalled products should be reviewed immediately by a knowledgeable product liability attorney. It is crucial that the product be preserved in its original state, in order to prove that a particular defect caused the accident and resulting injuries.

While product recalls may prevent accidents and injuries, the problem is that not everyone who owns the product learns of the recall. Use of a recalled product can lead to serious injuries. Increased awareness is very important.
